How to Buy Sustainably: Everyday 10 Criteria To Look For - PART ONE

Sustainability is becoming more important to people shopping online, and for a good reason. We need to be conscientious about how we treat our planet if we want it to be around for future generations. That's why more and more people are interested in buying sustainably.

It’s not easy to know how to buy sustainably. With so many different products on the market, it's hard to determine which ones are sustainable and which ones aren't.

Sustainable Shopping Made Simple

That's why we've put together 10 criteria that you should look for when trying to buy sustainably! By using these guidelines, you'll make informed decisions about the products you purchase and help reduce your environmental impact. Let's get started!

1. Sustainable From the Start

The first criterion we check is if the company is sustainable from the start. This means that the company was founded with a commitment to sustainability and is not just greenwashing its way into your shopping cart.

These companies are typically manufacturing products using less energy and water and have a smaller environmental impact. They also value sustainable and recycled materials and packaging.

A great example for this criterion is Aria.

Aria

Aria paper towels are made with 100% recycled paper. They use less water and energy to produce than traditional towels and have a smaller environmental impact.

They are made with responsibly sourced trees, and three new trees are planted for every tree used. They offer premium strength, absorbency and quality, and sustainable manufacturing. Aria is perfect for messes anywhere! Each pack includes six rolls of two-ply paper towels with 138 sheets per roll.

2. Made in the U.S.A

The second criterion is if the product is made in the United States. Products made in the U.S.A. not only support the local economy but also have a smaller carbon footprint because they don't have to be transported as far.

They have to adhere to certain environmental and labor standards and regulation.

Take Bean & Lilly Floor Cleaners for example.

Bean & Lily Floor Cleaners are the perfect choice for those looking for a safe and effective way to clean their floors. They are made with natural ingredients and pH appropriate for the job. These cleaners are also safe for both people and pets.

The concentrated formula means you only need a small amount to get the job done, saving money and resources. Plus, it's made in the U.S.A., so you can be sure that it meets the highest environmental and labor standards.

3. Plant-based, Biodegradable

The third criterion is if the product is plant-based and biodegradable. It means that it's made from renewable resources and will break down naturally over time.

Plant-based and biodegradable products are typically less harmful to the environment than those that aren't. The reference product we use for this criterion is Caboo Toilet Paper.

Caboo Toilet Paper

Caboo Bamboo Toilet Paper

It is made from sustainable bamboo, a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional tree-based toilet paper. It's gentle on sensitive skin and safe for all disposal systems.

Plus, it's biodegradable, so you can feel good about using it, knowing that it won't harm the environment.

4. Plastic Free

The fourth criterion is if the product is entirely devoid of plastic. This means that it doesn't contain any plastics and is made from sustainable materials. Did you know that 99% of plastics are made from petroleum?

Plastic-free products are better for the environment because they don't produce any plastic waste.

Take a look at Earth Breeze Laundry Detergent for example.

5. Cruelty-Free Formula

Cruelty-free products have not been tested on animals and do not contain animal-derived ingredients. To obtain the Leaping Bunny certification, a company must now have any ingredients, throughout its supply chain, that have been subject to animal testing.
